Workup

KOH examination can be performed by scraping the lesions, placing the scraped scale on to a microscope slide, covering it in 10 % KOH solution, waiting 10–15 min, and then looking at the slide under a microscope. All non-fungal cells will be destroyed, allowing for easier identification of fungal hyphae. A fungal culture from the scrapings may also be sent to lab for analysis if the diagnosis is still uncertain; however, cultures usually take about 2 weeks to grow. If there is a high clinical suspicion of tinea cruris, treatment should be initiated in the interim.
